Edition Six

Today is Labor Day in the United States. To celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers, Edition Six is dedicated to something Americans don’t do enough of, take time off.

According to this study from the Center for Economic and Policy Research, the EU requires countries to grant workers at least 20 working days of paid vacation, but many nations go well above that number and have a heap of paid holidays too. France requires at least 30 paid workdays off (not including paid holidays) while the U.K. mandates 28, followed by Austria, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Spain and Sweden at 25. The United States is on the complete flip side of this coin, mandating no paid vacation or paid holidays. We are the only country in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, made up of the world’s 36 wealthiest nations, that doesn’t require paid leave.

About a quarter of working Americans have no paid vacation or holidays. Another 52% of American workers had unused vacation days in 2018. The good news? Americans used an average of 17.2 days of vacation in 2018, which is up from 2017. Let’s keep encouraging people to take time off, see the world, experience different cultures and beliefs and recharge.

Hipcamp is an online marketplace that helps people discover and book unique camping experiences, offering a fully stocked campsite option for those who don’t have their own gear. After recently locking in their $25 million Series B that both Jay Z’s Marcy Venture Partners and Will Smith’s Dreamers Fund participated in, with Andreessen Horowitz leading the round, they are expanding on their goal of getting more people outside. They currently offer camping, glamping and RV options on private land but also real-time availability and review data for federal lands like national parks. They are aiming to add state park campground listings soon and their Founder happens to be one of the loveliest people on the planet. See more from Fast Company here and Cool Hunting here. They have also recently been covered by Dwell, Smithsonian, CNTraveler and many more.
